Flying lead changes is a combination of training, practice, training, practice and more practice! Some horses are trained to change lead on command, and will even counter-canter when you ask them too, but these are more advanced moves usually seen in dressage.
Most horses that are well-schooled and high-miled will automatically change lead when they need too. It is actually easier for them and they are better balanced when they canter on the correct lead than when they counter-canter, so they will just switch whenever they change direction!
I've observed Rapunzel change her leads on the fly when she runs around in the field, it's pretty cool.
Did you know that horses can sleep standing up? Their legs lock in the standing position so they don' t fall down while they doze off. Cool huh?
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do that ^^
ReplyDeleteHow do you do flying lead changes on a horse?? I've wanted to learn how
